He then went on to play for the Marylebone Cricket Club in first-class fixtures until 1926. Hartley also played Test cricket for England on their tour to South Africa in 1905-06. In the Army, Hartley served in both the Second Boer War and the First World War, being mentioned in dispatches during both conflicts.
