This enables software programmers to build applications for mobile devices using HTML[3]. Rhomobile's Rhodes framework supports development for the iPhone, Windows Mobile, Blackberry OS, Symbian and Google Android [4], Symbian and BlackBerry operating systems.[5] These are true native device applications that work with synchronized local data and with device capabilities such as GPS, PIM contacts and camera. Most user interface customization can be done in HTML templates (ERB, eruby files). A single set of source written with Rhodes can be compiled to run across all of the supported smartphone operating systems[6]. Rhodes provides access to native device capabilities such as GPS geolocation, PIM contact reading and writing, and camera image capture. RhoSync is a standalone server component allowing Rhodes applications offline and disconnected edit and access to data. This allows interacting with SaaS Software as a Service backends [7]. The information is stored locally on a users' device and available to them even when disconnected and offline. The mobile developer implements a "source adapter": a collection of methods (query, create, update, and delete) that are used by the RhoSync server to enable RhoSync to synchronize applications. Rhodes apps that use a RhoSync server can assume all data is available and current on the device. Developers write database ORM code to access and create information, which replaces network programming and information retrieval from the device. RhoSync uses the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and iPhone 3.0 [8] SDKs for Push. It uses BES Push and iPhone Push for synchronization, allowing real-time updates of backend application information. Rhohub is a hosted development environment for mobile applications, developed with Rhodes and RhoSync. It allows developers to write native apps in HTML and Ruby, and then build these apps without installing device Software Development Kits (SDKs). Developers can then build native apps for all smartphone devices, which use local synchronized data from enterprise backends while utilizing device capabilities such as camera and GPS. RhoHub allows developers to build their applications for multiple smartphone platforms without installing the native device [9] SDKs. Since RhoHub is hosted, developers do not need to run their own instance of an IDE on Windows or Mac OS X to make applications. RhoHub includes a full version of RhoSync allowing developers to easily test applications with synced data.
