It is located on the Salalah coastal plain, 5.5 kilometers northeast of Salalah's city centre. It is currently mostly used as a domestic airport, but during the Khareef season Salalah airport receives numerous charter flights from neighbouring Persian Gulf countries and beyond. At the moment the airport is being expanded and modernized. The initial stage of expansion is scheduled for completion in November 2011, delayed one year mainly because of the cyclone Gonu, and the new terminal will be able to accommodate 2 million passengers per year.
