Francis Lewis High School offers a number of special programs upon admission: Jacob K. Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps The JROTC Program at Francis Lewis High School has earned nationwide accolades. In 2007 the Patriot Battalion has earned three 1st place national titles: Academics (for the second year in a row), Drill (First in Armed and 3rd in Unarmed) and the Raiders' first national title. The Battalion's Drum Corps performs at numerous parades during the year and the Honor Guard performs at such events as basketball and hockey games at Madison Square Garden. The Battalion Choir performs in school events such as the singing of the National Anthem at Pep Rallies. The Battalion’s P.T. Teams participate at the League Commander's Cup and defends their first place title. The Battalion participates in numerous community service events such as park clean ups, fun runs, parades, food drives, clothing drives, military mail bag and Operation Christmas Child. The Chess Club allows individuals to compete in school-wide competitions. The Nu Gamma Psi step team is a team of both boys and girls. They go around the city and compete against other schools around the borough. The Key Club is a unique community service club that collects cans, conduct bake sales, clothes drive, and even toy drives. The Red Cross Club helps students serve their community through learning how to respond to injuries during an emergency. The Youth Press is an online magazine focusing on politics, culture, technology, health and other various topics. Students may choose the full program to get a full years' college credit, or just courses of interest (for credit towards single college courses such as math or humanities). There are few honors programs at Francis Lewis. They include: Math and Science Research, The University Scholars Program, and The Jacob Javits Institute for Law. The University Scholars Program The University Scholars Program helps many students to get accepted into top colleges and universities. Out of thousands of 8th grade applicants for the University Scholars Program, less than 5% of them are accepted. Accepted applicants are based on excellence in 6th, 7th and 8th grade coursework, as well as scoring fours in both the NYS Math and ELA examinations. Accepted students are separated from the rest of the student body, taking a challenging and rigorous curriculum. Only Honors and Advanced Placement Level courses are incorporated into the curriculum, as well as the mandatory gym, computer, music, and arts electives. Francis Lewis provides University Scholars opportunities to apply to specialized science-enrichment courses at Columbia University, called the Science Honors Program. At Columbia University, University Scholars are offered to take courses in Neurobiology, Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, String Theory, Organic Chemistry, Astronomy, Modern Cosmology, Particle Physics, Number Theory, or Human Physiology. In addition to allowing University Scholars to apply and take courses at Columbia University, Francis Lewis also allow its students to apply to go to Harvard University as scholars for the Harvard University Secondary School Program (SSP) during the summer. University Scholars at the Secondary School Program at Harvard are able to take challenging courses and prepare for college life. College fairs, advice, workshops, and academic sessions are some of the typical activities University Scholars are able to participate at SSP. In addition, qualified SSP University Scholars are allowed to be granted application interviews for Harvard University, if eligible. University Scholars are also able to apply to the Lewis's Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program (LERCIP), an 8-week paid summer internship program for sophomores and juniors interested in science, technology, space, and/or engineering. University Scholars may also apply to the Summer Science Program established by the Thacher School. The Summer Science Program offers University Scholars to take college-level courses in Physics, Programming, Astronomy, and Calculus. Guest speakers and field trips to facilities, like observatories, are also incorporated into the program sessions. University Scholars are also able to apply to Yale University's Summer Sessions. At Yale, they are given the opportunity to spend time with scholars and professors in a close-knit environment. In addition to earning college credit, University Scholars experience a college-like setting as they live on campus at Yale University. Trivia Francis Lewis's drama program has performed Grease, Guys & Dolls, Footloose, Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, and The Wedding Singer in the last six years under the guidance of Ms. Marci Finkelstein. The Patriot, Francis Lewis High School's newspaper, at the time advised by Marci Finkelstein, was one of three schools in New York State to win a "First Place Award" in the American Scholastic Press Association's newspaper contest for 2008 (scoring 880 of 1000 possible points). The editors of the winning June 2008 issue were Daniel Bacharach, Ana Maria Blanco, and Trinel Torian. In 2003, New York City artist Marshall Weber created a unique artists book by hand tearing a 1969 yearbook from Francis Lewis High School and collaging it into a vintage stamp album.
