He won two gold medals at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and a bronze medal in the 4 x 10 km at the 2007 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo and finished 9th in the 15 km at those same championships. Hellner has a total of seven victories in the junior levels of cross country skiing up to 30 km from 2003 to 2005. In Gällivare, Sweden he took his first world cup win on a 15 km event. He won a gold medal at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games in the 30 kilometer cross country pursuit. He completed the race in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 11.4 seconds for his first Olympic medal.
