Lava River Cave Entrance to Lava River Cave Location Coconino National Forest, Coconino County, Arizona, USA Lava River Cave in Northern Arizona's Coconino National Forest is a unique kind of cave known as a lava tube. It is believed to be the longest cave of this kind in Arizona. The cave was discovered by some lumbermen in 1915. Today, Lava River Cave is freely accessible to the general public. Geologists believe Lava River Cave was formed sometime between 650,000 and 700,000 years ago when molten lava erupted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie. The top, sides and bottom of the flow cooled and solidified first, forming a tube. The mouth of Lava River Cave continued to flow, emptying out the present cave. Litter and graffiti have been problems within Lava River Cave since the late 1960s. A major restoration effort was organized in May 1991. Almost all the litter was packed out and much of the graffiti removed at that time. It was also historically referred to as "Government Cave" due to its location on the eastern edge of Government Prairie and southeast of Government Peak. This cave is very exciting for everybody who loves geology and related fields of science. It is free. You can walk inside, but you need to scramble in and out. You can feel cold air near the entrance. Stones near the entrance to the tube have green moss and algae on them. Cave is mostly dry, but due to the temperature change, there is a lot of condensation on the walls, ceiling and the floor near the entrance, which makes it slippery. It is recommended that you have sturdy hiking boots to go inside. Because it is around 40F (+5C) at summer time inside, make sure that you have extra jacket. Some people wear gloves, which is good idea. Each person should have a Headlamp (outdoor) and a spare light and batteries. A helmet (such as a construction or bicycle-type) is also recommended as there are low sections that are easy to hit your head on. Dogs should not be taken in the cave since there are only limited and very slow biological processed to render their waste (urine & feces) unobjectional. Human and animal waste will remain obvious for many years in the cool, dry environment of the cave. Probably when volcano (likely it was Kendrick Peak) erupted, or it was some related eruption, lava flowed outside of the ground and created the river. Then because of cold air, rain and other conditions it created crust which is good heat insulator. Lava continued to flow inside of this tube until it flowed out completely leaving this tube. Later sand covered it and forest grow above, so you can't see it if you are standing above. In one place ceiling collapsed and this created the entrance which we are using now.
