He has been active since 1997 but playing mainly for small unknown teams in the Ecuadorian lower divisions. On 2006, he had his first opportunity in the Ecuadorian Serie B playing for the well known team from his native Esmeraldas, the Esmeraldas Petrolero. The next year he was transferred to Espoli and helped them to get the promotion to the Serie A. On the 2008 season he was a regular in Espoli's line up and his skills as a Wingback and defender were quickly recognized by the media. He acquired massive local recognition when on a match against Emelec he violently fouled forward Daniel Vega and broke his two front teeth, the press condemned this and immediately gave him the nickname, "The Dentist". Weeks later he was also involved in Barcelona's forward Marcos Mondaini's ankle injury. Despite these violent behavior on the pitch he also demonstrated to be a very good and skillful player, and Emelec signed him for the 2009 season.
