As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 2,097 and an area of 27.4 km².[1] The municipality of Mergozzo contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Albo, Bettola, Bracchio, Candoglia, Montorfano, and Nibbio. Next in importance is the quarrying and working of stone. The famous pink marble of Candoglia, which was employed in building the Duomo di Milano from the fourteenth century on, is still extracted; the stone of Montorfano is exported throughout the world.
