(December 2006) John Chupco was a leader of the Hvteyievike Band of the Seminole during the time of their forced relocation to Oklahoma. Chupco refused to sign a treaty between the Seminole and the Confederate States of America, leading to a split in the Seminole leadership in which Chupco, from 1861-66, served as chief of the Seminole who supported the Union. Members of this group enlisted in the Indian Home Guard Brigade of the Union Army. The split in the leadership of the tribe continued until 1872. John Chupco died in 1881.
